July 18, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of Christoph Freund as the club’s new Sporting Director, according to an official statement released by the Bundesliga side on Tuesday.
Freund, a 46-year-old Austrian, currently holds the same position at Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga and will assume his new role at Bayern from September 1. The move comes after Bayern bid farewell to club CEO, Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic in May, shortly after securing their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title on the final day of the season.
With an impressive 17-year tenure at Red Bull Salzburg, Freund will take over from Bosnian Salihamidzic as Bayern’s Sporting Director. Bayern’s CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, believes in Freund’s ability to strengthen the team in the future, working alongside head coach Thomas Tuchel’s coaching staff and Technical Director, Marco Neppe. In a statement, Dreesen remarked: “We are convinced that he is the right person to strengthen the team in the future, together with Thomas Tuchel’s coaching team and Technical Director, Marco Neppe.”
The agreement with Red Bull Salzburg ensures that Freund will remain fully involved in shaping the current transfer period with his long-time employer until the beginning of September. Both clubs reached a mutual understanding that Freund’s departure would be delayed, given his exceptional contributions at Red Bull Salzburg. The move to Bayern Munich presents an exciting new challenge for Freund, who will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the club’s future.
