October 18, (THEWILL) – Inter Miami superstar, Lionel Messi, has been revealed as the highest paid player in Major League Soccer (MLS), according to the league’s annual release of salary data. Messi’s $12 million base salary and $20,446,667 total guaranteed compensation have both set new MLS records.
However, Messi’s actual compensation is believed to be between $50-60 million when additional earnings from MLS’ Apple TV deal are included, according to comments made by Inter Miami co-owner, Jorge Mas, to Spanish newspaper, El País, in July.
Since Messi’s arrival, Inter Miami has seen record crowds and now boasts over 15 million Instagram followers, up from just over 1 million in June. MLS matches featuring Messi have also achieved record viewership figures.
Such sums are to be expected for a player of Messi’s calibre, which includes seven Ballon d’Or titles, four UEFA Champions League wins and most recently, the World Cup trophy. With Messi under contract until 2025, and an option for an extra year, the league looks set to continue reaping the benefits.
Even with tens of millions still heading Messi’s way, the superstar’s tremendous impact since his July debut surely makes him deserving of such unprecedented compensation, and even more.
