July 17, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid have announced that Croatian midfielder, Luka Modric, has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2025. The 38-year-old’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the 2023/2024 season.

Modric joined Real Madrid in 2012 and has since become one of the most decorated players in the club’s history. He has won 26 trophies with Los Blancos, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns. The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner played a key role in Real Madrid’s UCL and League double last season.

The veteran midfielder’s decision to extend his stay at the Bernabeu, comes as a surprise to many, given his age and the recent retirement announcement of his long-time midfield partner, Toni Kroos. However, Modric had previously hinted at his desire to continue playing for Real Madrid during the celebrations following their UCL triumph last season.

Despite Croatia’s early exit from Euro 2024, Modric remains committed to international football. With 178 caps for his country, he shows no signs of slowing down. “I’d like to keep playing forever, there probably will come a time when I must hang up my boots. I’ll keep playing on, I don’t know for how much longer,” Modric stated.

Real Madrid fans will be delighted to see their midfield maestro remain at the club for another season. Modric’s experience and leadership will be invaluable as the team looks to compete for more silverware in the 2024/2025 campaign.
