March 06, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid fell further behind in the La Liga title race on Sunday, after a goalless draw with Real Betis, while rivals, Barcelona secured a win earlier in the day.
Los Blancos are now trailing their El Clasico rivals by nine points after 24 games. Sunday’s fixture was supposed to cut that widening gap but Betis dominated the opening 10 minutes, with Ayoze Perez coming close to scoring a venomous volley that was saved by Thibaut Courtois.
However, it was Real Madrid who had the ball in the net, with Antonio Rudiger scoring off a Karim Benzema free kick that deflected off his arm, only for the goal to be disallowed for handball.
The second half saw more action, with Vinicius Junior setting up Benzema for a shot on goal that was saved by Claudio Bravo. Real Betis’ Borja Iglesias also had a great opportunity to score, but his shot was blocked by Courtois and the draw became inevitable.
Real Madrid will face Espanyol next Saturday, while Real Betis will look forward to their Europa League match against Manchester United on Thursday.
