January 07, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid booked their place in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey on Saturday night, with a 3-1 win away at fourth-tier side Arandina.
The 13-time Copa del Rey winners dominated possession and chances at El Montecillo, racking up 15 shots to Arandina’s two. However, the minnows defended valiantly for most of the match, throwing bodies in front of shots and keeping the favourites at bay. It was not until Joselu converted from the penalty spot in the 54th minute that the floodgates opened.
Brahim Diaz added a second almost instantly before Rodrygo netted late on to put the result beyond doubt. Despite the comfortable scoreline, Manager Carlo Ancelotti will know his side made heavy weather of victory against the fourth division team.
Arandina deserve credit for a stoic defensive display that kept the game goalless for over 50 minutes. However, Los Blancos’ quality and depth ultimately shone through to carry them into the next round.
The night was slightly marred for the visitors when Nacho scored an unfortunate own goal in injury time. Yet, Arandina’s players and fans can still celebrate matching Madrid’s second-half goal tally. Next up for Ancelotti’s men is top-flight opposition in the form of rivals Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup.
