March 11, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid clawed their way back from a goal down to secure a 3-1 victory over Espanyol in an enthralling La Liga encounter on Saturday.
The win saw them cut the gap between themselves and league leaders Barcelona to six points. But, it was Espanyol, who drew first blood with a magnificent strike from Joselu that left Real goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, helpless.
However, the visitors’ joy was short-lived as Vinicius Junior brought the home side back into the game with a well-placed shot that found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Real then took the lead just before halftime through Eder Militao, who headed in a superb cross from Aurelien Tchouameni.
Substitute Marco Asensio then sealed the deal for the hosts in stoppage time to cap off an impressive display. Los Blancos now turn their attention to defending a 5-2 lead over Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League last 16 on Wednesday.
For Espanyol, a tie against Celta Vigo at their RCDE Stadium on Saturday, awaits in La Liga as they attempt to get back to winning ways after two consecutive losses.
