January 11, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid booked their place in the final of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday night, with a dramatic 5-3 extra-time victory over city rivals, Atlético Madrid, in Riyadh. Carlo Ancelotti’s side looked destined for defeat after going 3-2 down in the 78th minute, but scored three late goals, including two in extra time, to clinch a pulsating El Derbi semi-final.
The lead changed hands several times during a frantic opening 45 minutes. Atlético took an early lead through Mario Hermoso’s 6th minute header before Antonio Rüdiger equalised for Real Madrid from a set piece. Ferland Mendy put Los Blancos ahead in the 25th minute only for Antoine Griezmann to write his name into Atléti history seven minutes later, becoming the club’s all-time record goalscorer with strike number 174.
The second half lacked clear-cut chances until Rüdiger scored an own goal to put Atlético back in front with 12 minutes remaining. However, Dani Carvajal equalised in the 85th minute to send the tie into extra time. Real Madrid dug deep in the additional 30 minutes, scoring twice to progress to the final where they will face either Barcelona or Osasuna.
The winning goal came via an own goal when Joselu’s attempt deflected off Stefan Savić and past Jan Oblak. With Atlético pushing forward, Brahim Díaz secured victory on the counter attack in the final seconds. Real Madrid will now look to lift the Super Cup trophy when they take on Barça or Osasuna this weekend.
