January 26, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid has called on authorities to hold those responsible for the abuse of Vinicius Junior accountable after pictures were shared on social media showing a mannequin wearing the player’s shirt hung by the neck from a bridge in the Spanish capital.

The team released a statement condemning the act, labelling it as “a repugnant act of racism, xenophobia and hatred.”

As THEWILL previously reported, Atletico Madrid, Madrid’s rivals and the team they are set to face in a Copa del Rey match on Thursday, also condemned the act through a statement, calling it “absolutely repugnant and inadmissible” and an attack on the “dignity of persons and institutions.”

The Confederacao Brasileira de Futebol (CBF) has joined in the condemnation, stating that “intolerance and discrimination are not part of sport and must be eliminated from society” and calling for those responsible to be identified and punished under the law.

La Liga also demanded that a thorough investigation be conducted and that those found guilty be held accountable through the imposition of criminal penalties.
