November 03, (THEWILL) – French defender Raphael Varane has been ruled out for a month with a hamstring injury, according to Manchester United.
Varane, who joined United from Real Madrid in the summer, sustained the injury in the first half of United’s 2-2 Champions League match with Atalanta on Tuesday night.
With the score at 1-0 in favour of Atalanta, he was removed from the game and replaced by Mason Greenwood.
In a statement on Wednesday, United said: “The club confirms that Raphael sustained a hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him out of action for around a month.”
Since his arrival at Old Trafford, the France international has been a crucial player for United. He has appeared in six Premier League games and three Champions League games.
Varane will now miss the weekend match against Manchester City and is expected to be unavailable when the Premier League and Champions League resume after the November international break.
Varane’s absence will be significant for United’s defence because he has been a key player for Solskjaer since his arrival at Old Trafford. The circumstances under which he sustained the injuries are also problematic. In their last two games, United has used three defenders.
Victor Lindelof was out of the game on Tuesday night, and there is no assurance he will be back by the weekend.
