Rangnick Admits Holding Talks With Bayern Over Manager Role

April 24, (THEWILL) – Ralf Rangnick, the current manager of the Austrian national team, has acknowledged engaging in discussions with Bayern Munich regarding their soon-to-be vacant head coach position. The revelation comes as the German giants prepare to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the current campaign.

In an interview with Austrian outlet 90minuten, Rangnick confirmed that Bayern had approached him about the role. However, the 65-year-old manager indicated that he would need to carefully evaluate several factors before making a decision. “Bayern Munich have contacted me and I have also informed the OFB (Austrian Football Association),” Rangnick stated. “We have a very trusting relationship. My focus is on the Austrian national team.”

Rangnick emphasised his commitment to the Austrian national team, stating: “We are completely focused on the European Championship. I feel very comfortable here. At the moment, there’s no reason for me to focus intensively and specifically on that.” He further clarified that the ‘moment’ to consider the Bayern offer would arise if they explicitly expressed their desire for him to take the role.

The experienced manager, who spent seven months as interim manager at Manchester United in the 2021/2022 season, dismissed financial motivations as a driving factor. Instead, Rangnick prioritised the opportunity to make a meaningful impact and develop a successful team. “For me, it’s about other things: can I make a difference? Is there a chance of developing a team and being successful? That’s what drives me. When that no longer motivates me, it’s time to retire.”

Rangnick boasts an extensive managerial background, having led various clubs including Hannover, Schalke, Hoffenheim, and RB Leipzig. His expertise also extends to the role of Director of Football, which he held at Red Bull Salzburg and Leipzig from 2012 to 2020. Bayern Munich will hope to leverage Rangnick’s wealth of experience as they aim to reclaim their dominance in German football after Bayer Leverkusen ended their 11-year reign as champions earlier this month.
