August 29, (THEWILL) – Aaron Ramsdale is set to join Southampton from Arsenal for £25 million, with the goalkeeper currently undergoing a medical. The deal structure includes an £18 million upfront payment, a £1 million bonus if Southampton avoid relegation this season, and £6 million in performance-related incentives.
The 26-year-old England international is expected to sign a four-year contract until 2028, with an option for an additional year. Ramsdale’s move comes after he lost his starting position at Arsenal following David Raya’s arrival from Brentford in the summer of 2023.
Arsenal are now focusing on signing 23-year-old Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia as a replacement. Meanwhile, Southampton have been keen to strengthen their goalkeeping options before the transfer window closes. The club’s current first-choice keeper, Alex McCarthy has started their first two league matches this season.
Several English Premier League clubs, including Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth, had shown interest in Ramsdale earlier in the summer. However, Southampton have successfully negotiated the transfer, beating out competition for the goalkeeper’s signature.
The move represents a significant change for Ramsdale, who joined Arsenal in 2021 and quickly became their first-choice goalkeeper. His transfer to Southampton marks a new chapter in his career as he seeks regular playing time at the highest level.
