Raducanu Bows Out Of Australian Open In Rollercoaster Battle With Wang

January 18, (THEWILL) – Emma Raducanu’s Australian Open campaign came to an end on Thursday, as she fell to a tight three-set defeat against China’s Wang Yafan. The British star showed flashes of brilliance but was unable to overcome her more experienced opponent, losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 after nearly three hours on court.

The 21-year-old Raducanu has endured a difficult couple of years since her fairy tale US Open triumph in 2021. A series of injury issues limited her time on court last season but she entered this Grand Slam with cautious optimism as she continues her comeback.

It was a match filled with momentum swings and dramatics. Raducanu battled impressively from a breakdown in the second set before Wang regained control in the decider. Although ultimately defeated, Raducanu demonstrated the talent and athleticism that shot her to stardom.

Raducanu stated prior that her objective is simply staying healthy and rebuilding consistency after so much disruption. If she can avoid further fitness problems there is no doubt she has the weapons to challenge the best once again.

For now, though her Australian Open journey is over, at just 20 years old her story is only just beginning. She will likely take plenty of positives from this event as the British sensation plots her route back amongst the elite names in women’s tennis.
