November 19, (THEWILL) – Gregg Berhalter, the head coach of the United States, believes his team can defeat anyone on their best day as they get ready to play Wales in their World Cup opener.
The USMNT travelled to Qatar hoping to create an impression before hosting the event alongside Canada and Mexico in 2026. They failed to qualify for the competition in Russia four years ago.
Jurgen Klinsmann, Berhalter’s predecessor, stated that the USMNT could not win the competition in Brazil eight years ago and, although it was a realistic assessment, critics saw it as defeatist. Now, Berhalter believes his team has a good chance of beating any opponent.
He said: “What I do believe is that on our best day we can beat anyone in the world. Anyone. Look, it is a great honour to play in the World Cup, but we don’t want to just be participants. We want to perform.
“We think the first step is getting out of the group. And the second step is, in the knockout games, playing our best possible game and seeing how far we can go.”
