November 24, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min received the all-clear to start for South Korea in their World Cup opener on Thursday against Uruguay at Education City Stadium.
The attacker played with a facemask against the South Americans on November 1 after suffering an eye socket fracture during the UEFA Champions League match against Marseille.
His availability was a significant lift for the Korean team and manager Paulo Bento as they aim to start their Group H campaign on a victorious note.
Son will begin the match one goal short of tying Park Ji-sung, who scored once in each of 2002, 2006, and 2010 World Cups, for South Korea’s joint-most World Cup goals. Ji-sung is also the only player from his nation to have scored in three different World Cups at the moment.
Due to Edinson Cavani’s current ankle injury, Uruguay will start the game with a front two of Darwin Nunez and Luis Suarez.
