November 21, (THEWILL) – At the Al Thumama Stadium on Monday, the Netherlands defeated Senegal 2-0 courtesy of late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen.
In their first World Cup game since the Brazil 2014 event, the Oranje put on a lacklustre effort but still managed to win all three points from a profligate Senegalese side missing the clinical finishing of Sadio Mane.
Gakpo ran into the box with only six minutes remaining in normal time, rose in front of Edouard Mendy, and headed home Frenkie de Jong’s cross to break the deadlock and reward the pressing of the Dutch.
Even though Louis van Gaal’s team did not play well, they found the extra gear to get another goal. The second one came from Klaassen in stoppage time of a poor Group A match that did not rise to the promise of fireworks fans expected.
