November 23, (THEWILLI) – In their opening 2022 World Cup match at the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, Belgium defeated a tenacious Canada 1-0, thanks to a goal from Michy Batshuayi.

Batshuayi led the line in Romelu Lukaku’s absence, scoring in the 44th minute to settle a tense Group F match in the Red Devils’ favour and take Roberto Martinez’s squad to the top of Group F.

Thibaut Courtois saved an early Alphonso Davies penalty for the Belgians, who otherwise struggled against the nation breaking their 36-year-old absence from the World Cup.

However, Belgium increased their eight-match winning streak in the group stage, which is the longest streak in the history of the competition and brings them level with Brazil.

On Sunday, Group F action will resume for both teams. Canada will be hard-pressed to avoid another loss as they take on the 2018 finalists, Croatia, while Belgium will try to outperform Morocco.
