September 30, (THEWILL) – Paris St Germain were frustrated in their bid to go top of Ligue 1 after being held to a 0-0 draw by basement side, Clermont, on Saturday. PSG were thwarted by an inspired performance from Clermont goalkeeper Mory Diaw, who began his career in the French champions’ youth Academy.
Despite boasting a star-studded attack including Kylian Mbappe, PSG could find no way past the Clermont shot-stopper, who produced fine saves to deny efforts from Ousmane Dembele, Mbappe and Randal Kolo Muani. Diaw’s heroics ensured Clermont picked up a hard-fought point, halting a run of two straight defeats.
Clermont went close to a shock lead themselves early in the second half, but PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denied efforts from Shamar Nicholson and Yohann Magnin. As PSG pushed for a winner, Diaw remained defiant, keeping out shots from Achraf Hakimi and substitute Goncalo Ramos.
The result leaves PSG, who have played one match more, one point behind league leaders Brest after an inconsistent start to the Ligue 1 season. But manager Luis Enrique will be confident his side can build on recent Champions League success over Borussia Dortmund.
For Clermont, who kicked off bottom after irregularly previously taking one point from their opening six games, Diaw’s heroic performance could prove a turning point in their bid to climb out of the relegation zone.
