PSG Beat Angers 3-Nil, Need Only One Point To Clinch Ligue 1 Title

April 21, (THEWILL) – A 3-0 win over Angers at Raymond Kopa Stadium on Wednesday night, brought the star-studded Paris Saint-Germain side to within a point away from reclaiming the Ligue 1 title. Despite fielding a slightly depleted team, Les Parisiens were in command for the majority of the game and never looked back following Kylian Mbappe’s fantastic opening goal.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were hardly bothered by an Angers team that has previously demonstrated a knack to provide so much more when on form, and Sergio Ramos and Marquinhos added further strikes to complete off a professional showing that revealed their quality.
The game got off to a slow start, with PSG’s goalkeeper Keylor Navas making a smart early save before Thilo Kehrer and Marquinhos both failed to convert headers from close range.
Things came to life at the half-hour mark thanks to a moment of individual brilliance from Mbappe. The 23-year-old picked up the ball deep in midfield and paired with the ever-improving Achraf Hakimi to drive towards the Angers defence with poise, pace, and purpose. The Frenchman then blasted a terrifying left-footed drive into the far corner, which Anthony Mandrea was unable to handle.
PSG extended their lead in first-half injury time, when Sergio Ramos leaped unmarked to head home after Angel Di Maria teamed with Mbappe to take a quick short corner. It was reminiscent of his decisive goals in Real Madrid’s colours.
PSG pressed for a third goal after the break, with Hakimi and Mbappe both coming close, and they were rewarded when Marquinhos took advantage of some poor Angers marking to head home Di Maria’s cross.
The only blemish on the night was Edouard Michut’s late red card, which was issued by VAR for a hard tackle that resulted from an unfortunate slip.
After Marseille came back against Nantes to delay their title coronation, PSG now only need a point to dethrone Lille, with Saturday’s match against Lens the next chance Pochettino and his team will have to wrap up Ligue 1.
