December 05, (THEWILL) – The race for the golden boot award of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season is heating up squarely between two top contenders – Remo Stars’ Sikiru Alimi and Robert Christian Mizode of Bayelsa United, who are currently tied with nine goals each.
With 108 of the total 110 fixtures of the 2023 calendar now completed, statistics released by the NPFL Competitions Department revealed several other interesting insights. A total of 79 wins have been recorded so far, with 73 of those secured by home sides and just six coming from away teams. Additionally, 29 games have ended in draws.
In terms of scoring, the 2023/2024 NPFL season has seen a prolific 215 goals so far at an average of over 2 goals per match. Home teams contributed the most with 151 of those goals while travelling sides netted 64. There have also been seven own-goals scored out of the overall tally.
Referees have had their work cut out for them as well, issuing a total of 407 cautions to players over the 108 fixtures played. They have also given 11 red cards sending players off the pitch and on to an early shower.
As the calendar closes out this year to usher in 2024, Remo Stars currently lead the table with 22 points earned through their impressive 17 goals scored and nine goals conceded. With their miserly defence shipping in just five goals each, Doma United and Bendel Insurance boast the meanest back lines. In contrast, Bayelsa United has struggled defensively, allowing 20 goals – the worst record in the league.
