The Nigeria Prisons Service has confirmed that there was a jailbreak at the maximum prison in Kuje, a few miles from the nation’s capital Abuja on Friday night, but said one of the key persons being held at the facility for terrorism, Mr. Charles Okah did not escape.
Charles is the brother of notorious MEND leader, Mr. Henry Okah who is in prison in South Africa following his conviction for terrorism.
Earlier reports had suggested that Charles escaped during the jailbreak.
However, Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr. Francis Enobore, said the service had opened an investigation into the incident. “It is not true, Charles Okah is still in custody. The Comptroller of prisons has ordered an investigation…, he said.”
The spokesman later added that “Two inmates escaped from the prison at about 1930hrs though not through jailbreak. The inmates in question were awaiting trial for culpable homicide and have no relationship with Charles Okah in what ever manner as it’s being speculated.”
