June 14, (THEWILL) – At least eight passengers in Yenagoa bound speedboats have been abducted by suspected sea pirates, along Brass-Yenagoa waterways in Bayelsa State.
The passengers, 15 in number were returning from a burial they had attended over the weekend. While eight were abducted and whisked into the creeks, seven were freed.
Chairman, Maritime Workers Union, in Brass Local Government Area, Daniel Biodoumoye, who confirmed the attack, said, “The pirates intercepted the 200 horse power engine boat close to a rice farm and fled off with eight of the 15 passengers.”
Biodumoye also said that a combined rescue team of marine police, members of the union and others rescued the seven passengers who were abandoned by the pirates.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Asinim Butswat, said the Command has mobilised its operatives to rescue the victims and arrest the culprits.
