February 22,(THEWILL) – The PGA Tour and LPGA have announced a new mixed-tour event, the Grant Thornton Invitational, which will see players compete together in a co-sanctioned tournament.
The event is a massive step forward for both organisations, as it offers the LPGA higher visibility for its best players and showcases the incredible skills of both male and female golfers. There is also a $4 million purse that will be shared equally among players.
The QBE Shootout, which previously drew minimal attention, was a precursor to this event, with Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson participating in the 2022 event and drawing a lot of attention. PGA Tour pros raved about Korda’s swing, and the success of that event helped pave the way for the Grant Thornton Invitational.
The event will feature a strong group of golfers, including Finau, Fowler, Nelly and Jessica Korda, and Champ, as well as a varied group of young-ish golfers on the rise and old favorites. The Grant Thornton Invitational represents an important step forward for golf, women’s golf, and the LPGA, according to LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan.
