PGA Tour Addresses Players’ Worries With LIV Golf, Appoints Woods As Player Director

August 01 (THEWILL) – The PGA Tour has taken a significant step towards addressing players’ concerns by granting its players membership veto power over potential changes and actively engaging in discussions with LIV Golf.

Golf legend, Tiger Woods, joins a six-player board, which empowers players to have a say in the Tour’s direction. The Tour and its membership have committed to amending governing documents to ensure that no major decision can be made without prior involvement or approval from player directors, fostering a player-first approach.

Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Xander Schauffele were among the players, who voiced their concerns about trust issues between the PGA Tour and its Commissioner following the announcement of a merger with LIV Golf. In response, Commissioner Jay Monahan engaged in dialogue with Tour members, ultimately leading to Tiger Woods’ appointment as a PGA Tour Player Director.

The Player Directors, along with Special Advisor, Colin Neville, will now have full transparency and the power to approve or decline any potential changes to the Tour in Framework Agreement discussions with LIV Golf. This historic development aims to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders, including fans, sponsors, and players, ensuring the future of the game is shaped collaboratively.

As Commissioner Monahan resumes his role after a leave of absence, he is moving decisively towards rebuilding trust among its players. The granting of membership veto power signifies the Tour’s commitment to becoming a player-first organisation, and the inclusion of Player Directors in key decision-making processes ensures that players’ voices are heard and respected.
