September 03, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to face Sao Tome and Principe next week in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, and manager Jose Peseiro has named a strong 23-man squad for the fixture.
Amongst those called up are Gent duo Gift Orban and Jordan Torunarigha, who have earned their first national team call-ups on the back of impressive performances at club level. Also included is Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, whose goalscoring form in the Bundesliga has seen the young striker fast-tracked into the senior squad.
Peseiro has opted to keep faith with several regular starters, with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, and Wilfred Ndidi all retaining their places. Veteran forward, Ahmed Musa, is a notable absentee from the squad.
The Super Eagles have already secured qualification for 2024 AFCON finals in Ivory Coast. However, they will be eager to finish their campaign on a high note by defeating Sao Tome in Uyo. Anything less than victory could see them surrender the top spot in Group A to Guinea-Bissau.
With his contract recently extended by the Nigeria Football Federation, Peseiro has seemingly been afforded the luxury of trying out new faces ahead of a busy 2023 for the Super Eagles.
