January 01, (THEWILL) – Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has opened up on his squad selection process for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. The Portuguese tactician named a final 25-man roster of three goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders and eight forwards.

Speaking with the team’s media, Peseiro disclosed he originally had an expanded list of 72 players, which was narrowed down to a 41-man provisional squad before settling on the final 25. “The number is from the Nigeria Football Federation. NFF decided to take 25 players. I agreed, twenty-five players are enough to manage,” he stated.

Elaborating on his selection criteria, Peseiro cited performance in the national team, current club form and tactical balance as key factors. “Some players show good performance in the clubs but didn’t show in our national team. We tried to coordinate these characteristics and solutions for our system, for our game,” he noted.

The final squad includes the likes of Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Osimhen and William Troost-Ekong. Peseiro justified omitting some quality players by prioritising squad harmony. “I chose players, whether they play or not, that can create a better atmosphere in the team,” he said.

This can explain the inclusion of ex-captain Ahmed Musa, even if it does not justify why his slot was not given to a younger, hungrier and talented home-based player. Out of the 25 invitees, only one, Olorunleke Ojo (Enyimba FC goalkeeper) was named in the squad. This is not encouraging enough for home-grown talent, which as an invitation to the national team sparked the careers of some of Nigeria’s best footballers including Musa himself.

However, with the tournament kicking off on January 13, the Super Eagles will be hoping Peseiro’s balanced blend of youth and experience can capture a 4th AFCON title.
