Penalty Proves Pivotal As Enyimba Lose At Home To Wydad

October 22, (THEWILL) – Enyimba suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Wydad Casablanca in the new continental African Football League competition match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday.

The only goal of the game came from a 39th minute penalty, converted by Yahya Jabrane after Enyimba’s captain and goalkeeper, Ojo Olorunleke, gave away the spot-kick.

Manager, Finidi George, had named a strong starting 11 which included exciting young midfielder, Daniel Daga, but Enyimba struggled to create clear chances despite having the lion’s share of possession.

Wydad added to the hosts’ misery in stoppage time when defender, Alalibo Somiari, was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul on Mountassir Lahtimi after losing the ball. Somiari was initially booked, but the decision was upgraded to a red card after a VAR review.

Enyimba did carve out some opportunities, but lacked sharpness in attack, often rushing their finishing when in promising positions. The defeat leaves the home side with work to do in the second leg next week.
