Penalty Heartbreak For Spurs As Newcastle Win Melbourne Friendly

May 22, (THEWILL) – On Wednesday, Newcastle United emerged victorious in a post-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in Melbourne.

The match, played in front of a staggering crowd of 78,000 fans at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, ended 1-1 after regulation time before being decided by a penalty shootout.

Tottenham’s James Maddison, who had recently secured a spot in England’s provisional Euro 2024 squad, gave his side the lead in the 32nd minute with a well-taken goal. However, Newcastle’s Swedish striker, Alexander Isak, levelled the scores just before halftime, setting the stage for a closely contested second half.

Both teams made numerous changes after the break, but neither could find the decisive goal within 90 minutes. The match progressed to a penalty shootout, which appeared to catch some players by surprise. Spurs’ winger, Bryan Gil, saw his opening spot-kick saved, while Newcastle converted all their attempts to claim a 5-4 victory in the shootout.

Newcastle United will remain in Melbourne to face an A-League All Stars side on Friday in another friendly encounter. The match against Spurs provided a glimpse of the talents of Kieran Trippier, James Maddison, and Anthony Gordon, who were all included in England’s provisional Euro 2024 squad earlier this week.
