December 22, (THEWILL) – Pele is to remain hospitalised throughout the Christmas period, as his family and medical staff announced on Wednesday.

The Brazilian football legend, who continues to receive treatment for his cancer, as well as kidney and heart issues, has been making progress in his recovery but health professionals at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo said of Pele “requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions.” Although, it was reported that Pele’s cancer had “progressed,” he had not been moved to the intensive care unit.

THEWILL recalls that the 82-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo on November 29 for what his medical staff described as a re-evaluation of his chemotherapy treatments, which he has been receiving since having surgery to remove a colon tumour in September last year.

Pele’s daughters, Kely Nascimento and Flavia Arantes, have continued to reassure fans about his health. Earlier this month, while supporters held a vigil outside the hospital, they denied reports that Pele had been placed in end-of-life care.

An Instagram post they shared on Wednesday, read: “We decided with the doctors that, for various reasons, it would be better for us to stay here with all the care that this new family at Einstein gives us!!”

In an image in the post, the sisters could be seen smiling as they expressed gratitude to Pele’s supporters and wished them happy holidays.
