October 27, (THEWILL) – Brighton and Hove Albion cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ajax for their first-ever win in a Europa League match at the Amex Stadium.
The Seagulls dominated from the outset but struggled to break down a resilient Ajax defence in the opening 45 minutes. The deadlock was finally broken just before half-time when Joao Pedro pounced on the rebound after Karou Mitoma’s effort was parried by Ajax keeper Diant Ramaj.
Any hopes of an Ajax comeback were dashed shortly after the restart when Ansu Fati clinically finished off a flowing team move to double Brighton’s advantage. The Spanish youngster almost added a third minutes later, his fierce drive whistling just wide.
Ajax offered little attacking threat but did hit the woodwork through Steven Berghuis as the four-time European champions were thoroughly outplayed.
It was a historic night for Brighton and Roberto De Zerbi on the European stage with an accomplished performance, dominating from start to finish against the Dutch giants.
