February 13, (THEWILL) – Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the league table with a hard-fought win over Villarreal.
The team’s 11th consecutive victory in all competitions was secured by Pedri’s goal in the 18th minute, set up by a stunning one-two with Robert Lewandowski. Despite missing a glorious chance to open the scoring just three minutes into the match, Lewandowski was at the heart of Barcelona’s fluid play throughout the game.
The Polish striker linked up with his teammates on several occasions including a move that forced Villarreal goalkeeper, Pepe Reina, into a smart save. Villarreal continued to put up a strong fight, with Jose Luis Morales missing a chance in added time at the end of the first half.
The home side relentlessly pushed forward after the interval, but it was Barcelona who created the first great chance of the half, with Raphinha firing just wide of the post. Despite Yeremy Pino’s backheel assist to Samuel Chukwueze in the 89th minute, the goal was ruled offside.
Barcelona will next host Manchester United in the first leg of their Europa League knockout play-off round tie on Thursday, while Villarreal will travel to Real Mallorca for their next league game on Saturday.
