SAN FRANCISCO, December 12, (THEWILL) – The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, George Sekibo, winner of the rerun election in Rivers East senatorial district.

The returning officer for the election held on Saturday, Oji Ekumankama, announced this on Monday at council hall, Port Harcourt, venue of the collation.

He said Senator Sekibo polled 93,098 votes to defeat Andrew Uchendu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who garnered 34,193 votes.

Sekibo, who is a former member of the House of Representatives,  was first elected into the Senate in 2007.

He was declared winner of the National Assembly election in the senatorial district in March 2015, but the Court of Appeal sacked him on December 11, 2015.

Senator Magnus Abe of the APC had earlier been declared by INEC as the winner of the Rivers Southeast Senatorial election.
