Paystack CEO’s Club Sporting Lagos Gains Promotion To NPL

July 04, (THEWILL) – Nigeria National League outfit, Sporting Lagos FC, has achieved a remarkable feat, by gaining promotion to the Nigeria Premier League.

The football club, founded in 2022 by Paystack CEO, Shola Akinlade, exhibited impressive performances throughout their journey to the top flight. Competing in Group B2 of the NNL alongside five other teams including Ijebu United and Gateway United, Sporting Lagos emerged as group leaders with 18 points from 10 games, narrowly edging out Ijebu United on goal difference.

Having secured a spot in the Promotion Play-offs, the team was drawn into Group B, with the promise of promotion to the prestigious NPL for the final top two sides. Sporting Lagos demonstrated their mettle in the play-offs, commencing with a hard-fought victory against FC One Rocket, and ultimately sealing their top-flight status with a decisive 2-0 triumph over Abeokuta Stormers.

It required goals from Ayemwenre Rivio and Saturday Okon, to secure the vital win at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium in Asaba. That was all they needed to solidify their position among the elite teams in Nigerian football, and all the benefits that accrue from that.

Under the guidance of coach Paul Offor, Sporting Lagos has demonstrated exceptional progress since joining the NNL in 2022. The team’s success in securing promotion to the NPL has been a cause for celebration, with the coach and players in high spirits ahead of the start of the new domestic season.
