Paris Olympics: AFN Optimistic About Nigeria’s Prospects

April 16, (THEWILL) – The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), is looking forward to a strong performance from its athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, buoyed by recent qualification successes including Favour Ofili, for the women’s 200 meters event. Samuel Onikeku, the Technical Director of the Federation, voiced this optimism, highlighting Ofili’s standout form this year as a key indicator of what is to come.

According to Onikeku, the Olympics’ four-year cycle adds significant weight to the event, creating a unique pressure for athletes. “Most athletes want to go to the Olympics because it’s once every four years. So if you don’t get it right, that is the end”, he said, underscoring the importance of precision in preparation and execution.

The Federation is celebrating several notable performances across various disciplines, enhancing their confidence ahead of the Games. Athletes like sprinter Samuel Ogazi, who clocked an impressive time of 45.2 seconds and discus thrower Amaechi Obiageli, who achieved a milestone throw of 62.92 metres, are part of Nigeria’s growing list of hopefuls for Paris 2024.

Emerging talents such as Adaobi Tabugbo, in the 100m hurdles are also on the Federation’s radar. With these athletes making steady progress, Onikeku is confident of Nigeria’s prospects. “The collective efforts of these athletes, coupled with meticulous planning and preparation, are expected to result in one of Nigeria’s best performances at the Olympics”, he commented.

The AFN has committed to supporting its athletes in their Olympic ambitions, believing that their dedication and hard work will lead to success on this prominent international stage.
