September 30, (THEWILL) – Crystal Palace pulled off a shock 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
A brilliant curling strike from Danish defender, Joachim Andersen, in the 25th minute was enough to earn the Eagles all three points and lift them above the Red Devils in the English Premier League table. Roy Hodgson’s men started the brighter of the two teams and went close early on when Marc Guehi headed wide from close range.
United responded through Rasmus Hojlund, but his flick was cleared off the line by Tyrick Mitchell. However, Palace got the breakthrough their positive play deserved midway through the first half. Eberechi Eze’s dangerous free kick found its way to Andersen on the edge of the box, and he expertly curled the ball into the top corner beyond Andre Onana.
United improved after the break but struggled to create many clear openings. Bruno Fernandes forced a good save from Sam Johnstone while Alejandro Garnacho caused problems after coming off the bench. But Palace defended stoutly and limited the visitors to few chances. Hojlund missed a great opportunity late on to snatch an equaliser as the Eagles held on for a statement win.
In the second of their back-to-back fixtures, this result sees Palace rise to 9th place while United drop one spot to 10th after a disappointing display. Roy Hodgson’s men fully deserved the three points while the home fans vented their frustration at full time after a lacklustre showing.
