June 21, (THEWILL) – Jelena Ostapenko, the number two seed at the Birmingham Open, secured her spot in the second round after defeating grass-court newcomer, Linda Noskova, 6-2 5-7 6-1 on Tuesday.
Ostapenko dominated the opening set, displaying her strong serve by conceding only two points. Despite Noskova’s spirited comeback in the second set, the former Wimbledon semi-finalist proved too powerful in the decider. With her victory, Ostapenko is now set to face Venus Williams, who recently secured her second singles match win in almost two years, as THEWILL reported.
Expressing her delight, Ostapenko commented: “I’m finally back on one of my favourite surfaces!” This win marks her return to the grass court, a preferred playing surface for the tennis star.
Meanwhile, British number one, Katie Boulter, faced disappointment after failing to build on her recent WTA Tour title victory at Nottingham. Boulter was defeated by China’s Zhu Lin in a close contest, with the final score ending at 7-5 7-5.
