November 03, (THEWILL) – Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, will miss this weekend’s Serie A derby against Salernitana, as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury, his club confirmed this week. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since picking up the injury in mid-October and was recently granted permission by Napoli to return home during his rehabilitation.
Osimhen, who has been linked with moves to English Premier League sides, Manchester United and Chelsea, is expected to rejoin his teammates next week as he steps up his return to fitness. Napoli head coach, Rudi Garcia, revealed Osimhen has been in contact and following the recovery programme laid out by club doctors.
“He has made an agreement with the club”, Garcia told reporters on Thursday. “I’ve heard from him by message, and the doctors assure me that he is following the programme. Everything is fine and he will be with us next week.”
Without Osimhen and young forward, Lorenzo Russo, Napoli will travel to face rivals, Salernitana, on Saturday, looking to continue their recent upturn in form. Garcia insisted his focus remains on the players available for selection as Napoli target a vital three points.
“It won’t be an easy match, it’s a derby first of all, they need points, but we only have one positive result to achieve, the victory there, and we have to field the best version of Napoli, we know what to do,” the coach added.
Currently fifth in Serie A and seven points off leaders Inter Milan, Napoli will be hoping to build on their impressive comeback against AC Milan last Sunday. The Partenopei recovered from two goals down at half-time to draw 2-2 thanks to second-half strikes from Matteo Politano and Giacomo Raspadori.
