September 30, (THEWILL) – Napoli continued their climb up the Serie A table with a convincing 4-1 away win against Lecce on Saturday. Goals from Leo Ostigard, Victor Osimhen, Gianluca Gaetano and Matteo Politano saw I Partenopei claim all three points and move up to second place.

Ostigard opened the scoring with a header from a Piotr Zielinski free kick in the first half. Osimhen, a second half substitute, doubled Napoli’s lead shortly after coming on with a clinical finish from a Kvaratskhelia cross. Gaetano added a third with a powerful strike from the edge of the box late on. Politano then scored a penalty after Gaetano had been brought down in the box.

Lecce had briefly threatened an equaliser when Gabriel Strefezza thought he had scored, only for it to be ruled out for handball. Otherwise Napoli were largely in control, creating several chances and restricting the home side to limited opportunities. Alex Meret made a good first half save to deny Nikola Krstovic.

The win means Napoli jump to third place on 14 points after seven games, one behind joint leaders AC Milan and Inter Milan, who both have a game in hand. It maintains Napoli’s strong start under new manager Rudi Garcia as they aim to defend their Scudetto title. Lecce remain in 7th place on 11 points after a second consecutive defeat since they lost 1-0 to Juventus last time out.

Napoli will look to continue their climb up the Serie A standings when they host Fiorentina next Sunday. Lecce welcome Sassuolo to the Stadio Comunale Via del Mare next hoping to get back to winning ways.
