September 15, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Football Federation has named a 24-player squad for the upcoming Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe.
The Super Falcons will be looking to secure qualification for the 2025 finals in Morocco, where they will bid for a record 10th title. Barcelona striker, Asisat Oshoala, and Paris FC goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, are among the notable inclusions in the squad. Veteran defender, Onome Ebi, also retains her place as captain.
The two matches against Sao Tome and Principe represent Nigeria’s first games since their World Cup elimination against England in the last 16. While disappointed to exit earlier than hoped, the Super Falcons gained valuable experience at the competition, which they will aim to build on.
Head coach Randy Waldrum’s contract ended after the tournament but the NFF is currently negotiating fresh terms with the American. If terms are agreed, he will have a settled squad to choose from, with continuity in selection likely to be key. The upcoming games give Nigeria the chance to build momentum ahead of the AWCON finals.
Securing victory should be considered a minimum expectation given the gulf in quality between the two sides. Nigeria will be strong favourites to progress.
