April 28, (THEWILL) – San Diego Wave FC claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over Bay FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday, in an enthralling National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) encounter. Makenzy Doniak opened the scoring for the hosts in the 13th minute with her first goal of the season. However, Bay FC hit back through Nigerian international, Asisat Oshoala’s equaliser shortly after half-time.
The match appeared destined for a draw until the 78th minute when Wave substitute Elyse Bennett delivered an inch-perfect cross for Jaedyn Shaw to slot home the winner. Shaw’s cool finish capped an impressive cameo off the bench and sealed all three points for San Diego.
Despite the defeat, Oshoala will take encouragement from her goal-scoring performance, nodding home from close range after Kayla Sharples’ header struck the crossbar. The Super Falcons striker led the line tenaciously for 79 minutes before being replaced by Ghanaian forward, Princess Marfo.
San Diego’s victory moves them up to eighth in the NWSL standings, while Bay FC remain 10th. Next up for Oshoala and teammates is a home clash against Portland Thorns on May 2, whereas San Diego are away to Seattle Reign two days later.
