January 01, (THEWILL) – Former world number one, Naomi Osaka, said she was “proud” to have won her first match back after taking time off to have a baby. The 26-year-old defeated Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch 6-3 7-6 (11/9) at the Brisbane International on Monday, in her return to competition.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, took a break from tennis in September 2022 for mental health reasons. She then gave birth to a daughter in July 2023 before deciding to return for the 2024 season.

“I was super nervous but very excited to be out there,” Osaka told reporters after the nearly two-hour match. “I know all my opponents are tough so a 6-1, 6-1 win would be unlikely.”

After comfortably taking the first set, Osaka faced more of a test in the second. Korpatsch lifted her game while Osaka began to feel some nerves. Although she twice served for the match, Korpatsch refused to go away quietly before Osaka finally clinched victory on her third match point.

Osaka said motherhood has changed her perspective and outlook on tennis. “My daughter has helped me grow up so much more quickly,” she commented. “I want to return more of the love I’m given from fans and appreciate people more, including my opponents.”

Having rediscovered her passion for tennis, Osaka will be hoping her comeback continues at the Australian Open next month where she is a two-time champion. Her performance in Brisbane suggests she still has the game to compete at the top level.
