Osaka Digs Deep In Roland Garros Opener To Defeat Bronzetti

May 26, (THEWILL) – Japanese star Naomi Osaka recorded her first French Open victory since 2021 on Sunday, overcoming a tenacious Lucia Bronzetti 6-1 4-6 7-5 after surrendering a 4-0 lead in the deciding set. The former world number one’s intent to improve her clay court skills was evident in the opening set as she overwhelmed the Italian baseline battler.

However, Bronzetti’s never-say-die attitude surfaced in the second set. Though unable to outmuscle Osaka from the baseline rallies, her grit disrupted the four-time Grand Slam champion’s rhythm. Osaka appeared rushed at times, allowing Bronzetti to level the match after retrieving a late break chance.

The decider proved an intense affair. Osaka raced ahead 4-0 before Bronzetti, fueled by fervent Italian support, incredibly nosed ahead 5-4. Yet the Japanese steadied herself to reel off the final three games, demonstrating the fortitude which enabled her to scale the summit of women’s tennis.

Osaka’s victory continues the resurgent form she displayed during an impressive run at the recent Italian Open. Her newfound ardour for clay seems primed to make her a formidable threat at Roland Garros this year.

The 25-year-old’s first-round triumph provides an ideal platform to build upon over the fortnight in her quest to rekindle past glories on the Parisian terre battue.
