OPINION: AKINOLA SAMUEL: EIGHT YEARS ON

It’s now eight years since Akinola Samuel was gruesomely murdered by unknown gun men who first kidnapped and thereafter killed him around Ikeja axis of Lagos on 5th December, 2012. Many people are still asking same questions about who the killers are and why haven’t they been arrested. Samuel Akinola was a politician and a strong member of All Progressive Congress APC during his life time. He was also a business man. It was gathered that he was the CEO of Leagueman Technologies Ltd. His death to many remains a mystery as the great politician and philanthropist was regarded as many as an easy going man who took peace as one of his core values while he was still alive.

However, there is a different side to his story if one look into different incidents that occurred after his death. The incidents and shocking occurrences that we witnessed after his death gave people who are eager to know what transpired between this great politician and his assailants who many believes are still walking freely on the streets of Lagos an insight into why he was murdered in broad daylight on that faithful day.

A source gathered that before his death, Akinola Samuel had earlier appointed one Tunde Bamisile his nephew, as his Personal Assistant on media and data related issues both for his political office and his company. It was gathered had he had kept in Olatunde’s possession, some sensitive files about an opposition party (name withheld) and the content of which files he was about to expose to the police and the general public before he was murdered.

It was also gathered that after his death, on 5th January, 2013, some unknown gun men had visited his house severally to look for the said file and on one of such visits, the gun men met his nephew Olatunde Bamisile who they immediately recorginised. On sighting him, they demanded the said document from him and when he could not produce it, they tied him down and set the house on fire. It was reported that neighbours who heard Olatunde’ voice while shouting forced their way into the building when the gun men had left to rescue him and put off the fire.

We gathered further that on 10th January, 2013, Olatunde Bamisile was abducted by some gun men around Ikorodu area of Lagos. A source claimed that, while he was in their custody, Olatunde was made to understand that he was abducted in order to extract information from him about the file that they believed was kept with him by his late uncle. He was later released 5 days after when he was unable to give them any lead to where the file was.

It remain to be seen if the police would uncover the truth about the mystery surrounding the death of this political icon. It was gathered that Olatunde had since fled Nigeria and he is currently seeking protection against these yet to be arrested and already identified gun men who had been after his life before his escape.
