Open Defecation: Ebonyi Lawmaker Constructs 30 Toilets

November 06, (THEWILL) – The lawmaker representing Afikpo North/South Federal Constituency, Hon Iduma Igariwey, has built a total of 30 VIP toilets across the 23 wards in his Constituency, towards ending open defecation.

This was contained in a statement forwarded to Journalists in Abakaliki, and endorsed by the lawmaker, noting that the construction of toilets in his Constituency becomes necessary, as it would complement the sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) plan to eradicate the practice by 2030.

“According to the latest published data, about 122 million people are practising open defecation, which is a practice that contaminates the environment and spreads diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid, and dysentery to the human population, and all these emanate from poor sanitary practices.

“Open defecation is among the common unhealthy practices which have posed serious challenges to our environment. It directly affects the health and well-being of all the people living within a community.

“As part of his determination to tackle open defecation in his constituency, Hon. Iduma Igariwey has embarked on replacing most public latrines with modern-day toilet facilities”, it added.

THEWILL gathered that all the toilets currently being constructed by the lawmaker are near completion, and would be commissioned before the year ends.

Recall that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be the shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for all people living on the planet, both now and in the coming future.

The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), to replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The SDGs are intended to be achieved by 2030, and they are included in the UNGA Resolution called “Agenda 2030.”
