Olympic Qualifier: Madugu, Chiejine, Makwalla To Manage Super Falcons In Waldrum’s Absence

October 24,(THEWILL) – The Super Falcons will be without their head coach, Randy Waldrum, when they face Ethiopia on Wednesday, in the first leg of the second round of Olympic qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Games.

Waldrum, who also coaches the University of Pittsburgh women’s team, informed the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) that he would be unavailable for personal reasons in the United States. His Nigerian assistants – Justin Madugu, Ann Chiejine and Auwal Makwalla – will take charge of managing the team for the away leg against Ethiopia.

However, Waldrum is expected to return to lead the Super Falcons for the crucial second leg at home against Ethiopia on 31 October.

THEWILL recalls that the American coach recently guided Nigeria to the round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The Super Falcons put up a valiant fight before losing to England on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.

The African qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympics will feature home and away ties over four rounds until April 2024. Only the top two teams will qualify for the Olympics. Nigeria last participated in the women’s Olympic football tournament back in 2008 in Beijing.
