February 10, (THEWILL) – The Gold Label Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, which will be held in Okpekpe Town, Edo State, on May 27, has been approved as a qualifying event for the World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Budapest, Hungary in August.

This means that athletes competing for the prize money on offer will have the added motivation of securing the entry standard for the 19th World Athletics Championships.

According to World Athletics, the Okpekpe international 10km road race course has met all the requirements specified to serve as a qualifying event. The course has been measured by a certified measurer and is the first road race in Nigeria to have its course measured in this way.

The course was measured again last year, ensuring its validity until 2026, which means that the race will still serve as a qualifying event for the 20th World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan in 2025, and the Olympics.

To secure the entry standard for the World Athletics Championships, athletes must run 27:10 seconds for men, which will be a new course record, and 30:40 seconds for women, also a new course record.
