February 14, (THEWILL) – Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is set to open the 2nd edition of the Delta State local government sports festival on Tuesday.
The festival, which runs from February 14 to 16, aims to promote grassroots sports development in the communities. The event is organised by the state Association of Local Government Organisation of Nigeria (ALGON) and will take place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
ALGON chairman, Hon. Victor Ebonka, explained that the council initiated the festival to promote sports as a tool for transformation. The first edition, which featured athletics events, was held in Asaba from July 6 to 8, 2021, with Oshimili south local government emerging as the winner and Warri south local government coming in second.
The statement further revealed that several talents discovered during the first edition, such as Ayenuro Tate, Chukwuma Obim, and David Ashe, were part of the Delta State contingent to the last National Youth Games held in Ilorin, Kwara State.
With the 2nd edition of the Delta State local government sports festival underway, it is expected that more young talents will be discovered and groomed for national and international competitions and it is a formula that other States can adopt for the next generation of the country’s champions.
