September 14, (THEWILL) – Graham Potter’s first game as head coach ended in a 1-1 draw for Chelsea at home against Salzburg, leaving the 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League winners still winless in the UCL this season.
Last week, in their opening Group E meeting against Dinamo Zagreb, they suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat, which turned out to be Thomas Tuchel’s final game as manager of the Blues.
When Raheem Sterling opened the scoring against Salzburg with Chelsea’s first shot on goal in the second half, Potter’s reign appeared to be off to a blazing start.
However, Salzburg, who held Milan to a draw last week and are currently unbeaten in nine games across all competitions, fought back and found the back of the net through Noah Okafor in the 75th minute, leaving Potter and his team crestfallen.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had numerous opportunities to score, but Bernardo stopped him each time. Although Sterling was the best of the Chelsea frontline, Mount and Ziyech both missed additional opportunities. It will be up to Chelsea to exact retribution in their October rematch when they make the trip to Salzburg. They play Rapid Wien on Sunday in the Austrian league.
