November 13, (THEWILL) – Arsenal wrapped up pre-World Cup business by defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at the Molineux following a brace from Martin Odegaard, to give the Gunners a five-point lead over second-placed challengers, Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta’s side did not have it all their own way in the Midlands despite trying to capitalise on Brentford’s unexpected victory against City earlier on Saturday.
In the first half, Wolves frequently threatened on the break and Granit Xhaka had to be taken off for some discomfort. Gabriel Jesus finally had the ball in the net but the Brazilian’s early attempt was disallowed for offside. In his increasing bid to end his goal drought, he also hit the goal frame with a strike.
But in the second half, Arsenal’s unyielding perseverance paid off as skipper, Odegaard scored twice, first from an assist by Xhaka’s replacement, Fabio Vieira, and the second, a vicious strike, to secure all three points and consigned their hosts to the bottom of the standings.
Football at the club level will be on a break for Qatar 2022 but on Boxing Day, Arsenal will play host to West Ham in a London derby, and Wolves new boss, Julen Lopetegui, will face fellow struggling team Everton in his inaugural match as manager.
