BEVERLY HILLS, April 11, (THEWILL) – The Anambra state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has kick-started the construction of Umueri International Cargo Airport Project to be completed in the year 2020 when it would bring about 1,200 direct jobs.
He flagged off construction work on the 1,500 hectares site designated for the $2 billion airport facility on Tuesday at Umueri in Anambra East Local Council of the state, with a resolve of making the airport ready for use in three years.
The project is an Airport City Model which will be developed as an integrated city comprising an airport with two standard runways, a shopping mall, industrial and business parks and an airport motel.
Apart from actualising the dream of giving the state a befitting airport, Obiano asserted that the project would be among the best and biggest of such airport city projects in Africa.
He spoke during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, among the Anambra State Government, China Aviation, Orient Petroleum Resources Ltd and Elite International Investment Holdings Ltd. at Government House, Awka.
According to the Governor, “Ndi Anambra, when I took over the reins of leadership of this great state three years ago, I delivered an Inaugural Address titled – Expanding the Frontiers of Excellence. The historic ceremony we have gathered to perform here today is a very important step in expanding the frontiers of excellence in Anambra State.
“Ndi Anambra, three years into my first term in office, I stand before you today to answer the call of history. In Christian numerology, the number 3 is the number of perfect manifestation. So, three years into my administration, the Lord God Almighty has given us a new VISION and a new SONG!”
The facility will be constructed under the Build-Operate-Manage-and-Transfer, BOMT, model and three per cent of the profit made from the airport will be reserved for the host (Umueri) community.
