November 02, (THEWILL) – Liverpool booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, on Wednesday night. Darwin Nunez was the hero for the Reds, scoring a stunning second-half winner just minutes after coming off the bench.
Jurgen Klopp made a number of changes to his side but they took the lead in the first half through Cody Gakpo. Bournemouth fought back in the second half and equalised through Justin Kluivert, for his first goal for the club.
The scores were level for just six minutes though as Nunez collected a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner from outside the box. It was the Uruguayan’s third goal in three games as he continues his hot streak.
Mohamed Salah captained Klopp’s youthful Liverpool side on a wet and windy night on the south coast. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola will feel his side had a “big chance” to progress but Nunez’s moment of magic settled a close contest.
The Reds held on comfortably in the closing stages to make it through to the last eight and avoid a penalty shootout. Klopp will be delighted to see his squad players step up as Liverpool continue their quest for silverware on four fronts.
